2k Escalation: Rise of the Stompa

Ok, so got in another game with Dale over the weekend. As always, lots of fun.

Back maybe 3 years ago, a buddy of mine who won Best Overall at TSHFT won a stompa and straight up just gave it to me. Thanks Jeremy! Anyway, it’s been sitting, un-built in my office since then. With the advent of Escalation, I figured it was time to put it together. What a sweet model. I’m seriously intimidated about the prospect of painting it. So much detail and so many fun, Orky things. Anyway, I was eager to try it out against Dale.

Initially, Dale was going to try out the Stormlord, but I urged him that he should use the Shadowsword again because without it, the Stompa would probably run amok on his lines.

Here’s how the game went:

After the battle, I was talking to Dale and thinking of something I read from AbusePuppy in the Ordo boards about putting lootas with Mekboyz in the stompa. You can have 6 Mekboyz and two Big Meks in the stompa for a total of 8 rolls a turn to regen HPs. That’s 4 HPs on average getting brought back. Considering that I also have the KFF running (of course), only D weapons really have a shot at bringing the Stompa down in that configuration. It moves too fast, kicks out too much firepower, and just devastates stuff in melee.

I’ve come to the conclusion that Lords of War just don’t have any place in regular 40k. If you want to run a fun game of Escalation with someone cool, like Dale, then go for it. But I just can’t see this making any sense to include into regular games.

Let’s Escalate Things!

So, I’ve been reduced to mostly home gaming so the advent of Escalation poses nothing but more options for fun games to me. Dale had gotten a great deal on a baneblade and it fits well into his new IG army idea (ALL TANKS!), so he wanted to give it a go. Sure thing!

I decided to go against it with my Eldar list. Dale decided to give the new D weapons a whirl and went with the Shadowsword (proxied).

Here’s how the game progressed:

This right here is Dale’s first roll on the Destroyer Chart:

I should mention that we ended things at the end of turn 4. Dale conceded, which was fair, because I had first blood, would easily have linebreaker, and Dale had no conceivable way of taking an objective or denying me mine or getting linebreaker.

Overall, the D weapon on the Shadowsword is nasty, but the platform is manageable. I’m sure armies like Orks or hordey nids would just lol at it. I can really see how the Revenant would be a real bother though!

I’m currently finishing building my Stompa and I plan on using it soon!

DOUBLE FEATURE!

My good buddy Lorin came up from Stanford CA (he’s super smart, FYI) for a while and of course I had to play some games with him. Lorin and I go way back and were on Team Civil War Beard at TSHFT. AHHH, memories.

Lorin took the train down to Puyallup and we got two games in at my house. Lorin used his Sisters/IG in both games. 1st one I used my IG/DA and second game I used Eldar.

Catching my breath…

Well, I admit that life has been kinda crazy.

Had an emergency dental bill.  Have had kids

running amok.

BUT, and more importantly for the purposes of

this blog, I’ve been playing a lot of 40k lately.

  YAY!

So, I had 2 events I went to on 8/9 and 8/10-

8/11.  The first was the Ordo Open, a single day,

4 game tournament.  The second was the Ordo

Fanaticus Club Challenge (OFCC), a 2 day, 5 game

event (note:  I call it an event because it isn’t

marketed or thought of as a tournament).

Finally, had two pickup games as well!

In total I have gone 9-3 over that time over a

variety of lists at various levels of the power

curve.

It’s been long enough now that the details of

each game are NOT fresh so I won’t bother and try and break each one down.

I also, since STARTING to write this out, have had 3 more games.  2 I got on video and are uploading to YouTube as we speak.  The other was a pickup game at the GW store in Puyallup that was pretty lopsided in my favor vs non-optimized Tau.

I’ll be more diligent with uploads and posts so that I can keep track of this stuff.

One huge fun bonus of the last few weeks was that the nice guys at Game Face Nation were on hand at the Ordo Open to snap professional pics for everyone.  I got my admech counts-as-DA scouts all photoed and now I have a cool banner.  YAY.

Just an FYI

I’m currently in the midst of painting/modeling hell.

Gotta get my army painted for two tournaments next weekend and I’m just painting out of my mind.

Haven’t had time for games or nothin’. BOO!

I hope I’ll have it all done in time and will BLOW PEOPLE’S MINDS with them.

Honestly, if people don’t openly mock my painting, I think I’ll be happy! 😀

2k IG vs Orks (hilarious epic Creed moment!)

So. Much. Win.

Another Wednesday night, another game with Dale.

Had another close-fought game.

Here’s the video:

Couple thoughts here:

I think the next time I play Dale we’re going to just institute a policy that he wins the roll to go first/second. I keep winning the roll and I feel like that heavily influences our games. I think the Ork list he is bringing is a VERY hard matchup for me. Those lobbas just brutalize my guys, but there are so many critical targets that I can’t really go after them. His upgrade to get a runtherd on them paid off as the one time I did hit them with a stray shot, they would’ve been pinned without the bump in leadership. I’d be really interested to see what it is capable of if it could get the drop on me. I might even have to do reserve tactics to stem the tide!

Even with me going first and having a BRUTAL alpha strike, Dale still made a game of it, those Orks are no joke. I’m struggling to imagine what I would’ve done had he gone first, put 5 trukks, a battlewagon, and a warboss in my face, AND done 20 casualties to my fighty blob! I’m not sure I could have recovered. Then again, that is ALL his troops in my face so he’d be banking on taking my objectives from me and holding none in the backfield.

Anyway, I’d like to see how that would work, so we’ll do it that way next time.

I gotta say though, the moment when Creed assaulted and put his cigar out in the warbosses eye to kill him was particularly hilarious. Such a great moment!

Can’t wait to get this army fully painted and start going to some tournaments. YAY!

MODELLING

Man, I hate painting SOOOOOOOOO much.

That’s all I’ve been really doing the last few days since my last game. I really detest painting, but I gots to do it.

I’ve got a game scheduled for tomorrow night and another next Thursday. Looking forward to them.
